Senior lunch bunch

The Falcon Senior Service’s May 14 luncheon was sponsored by the Patriot High School Culinary Arts and Hospitality program and held at the Falcon Legacy Campus Patriot High School. The lunch is prepared and served by the Culinary Arts and Hospitality students.

Chef Eric Lustig and Chef Hunter Smith organized a taco bar for the luncheon. Welcoming the group with opening statements was Lynne Bliss, president of Falcon Senior Services, followed by Gary Miller, vice president. Miller introduced the guest speaker of the event, a local reporter and historian, Coben Scott.

Scott covered the history of the Jimmy Camp Area (Corral Bluffs, Jimmy Camp and the surrounding prairie). Scott said he had difficulty with the microphone so he worried the people in the back did not hear his speech. A notable interruption during the speech also occurred when an audience member’s phone rang; her ringtone, comedic enough, was the sound of crickets chirping. Coben then wrapped up his speech with a joke and encouraged the group to visit the area on a guided hike through the Corral Bluffs Association’s website.

One attendee and long-time local talked to Coben afterward, sharing that he grew up and still lives on a ranch just backed up to the Jimmy Camp land. He shared that he knew all the old timers and heard all their stories, even having met Raymond Lewis (of Banning-Lewis). Hopefully, an interview will be arranged in the near future.

The  luncheon finished with a raffle and a game of bingo. Winners had the options for Subway gift cards, donated goods and various snacks. The bingo games became quite intense, but thankfully, nobody was harmed in the process.
The Falcon Senior Service organization is open to any local age 55 plus. Visit falconseniorservices.org. (See more information in the Senior Services calendar item on Pg. 27.)
