After a wild and unexpected first month of high school football, the second month has proven to be as entertaining. Vista Ridge High School opened their season 4-0 and have kept the winning streak going. Both Falcon High School and the Sand Creek Scorpions started 0-4, but one of those teams has managed to turn it around. On Oct. 2, the Scorpionsí homecoming game featured a match against Palmer High School, Colorado Springs. Fans showed up in bunches, in anticipation of the first win for their team. However, Sand Creek didn’t show up for this one, and they were blown away by Palmer, 42-19. The following week, the Scorpions traveled to Falcon for the annual district rivalry game. Falcon came out firing and put up a 27-0 lead in the first half. The Scorpions never caught up, and dropped this one, 53-14. On Oct. 16, they squared off against the Montrose Indians, and lost their seventh in a row. The Indians beat Sand Creek 35-21. On Oct. 23, Sand Creek threw three interceptions to Mesa Ridge, and never recovered, losing 31-24. Sand Creek fell to Vista Ridge Oct. 30, 55-7.Vista Ridge Wolvesí fans have been pleasantly surprised by the success of Vista Ridge thus far. After starting 4-0, the Wolves played conference powerhouse Pine Creek. Vista put up a good fight, but ultimately lost, 28-18. However, next up, they played Mesa Ridge, and took out the Pine Creek defeat on them by winning 42-6. In the next game against the Widefield Gladiators, Elway Tubbs lit up the scoreboard, passing for 337 yards and four touchdowns on only 13 completions. Tubbs led the team to a dominating 55-9 win and a 7-1 start to the season, making them a lock for the playoffs. Vista Ridge won their Oct. 30 game against rival Sand Creek by a big score, 55-7.†The Falcons opened their season with a disappointing 0-4 start, but have since turned it around. On the first of the month however, the slump was still in effect. The Ponderosa Mustangs outplayed the Falcons and took the win 42-32. After an 0-5 start, a change had to be made, and it started by quarterback Ty Murphy, a senior, having more freedom in the offense. In the Falconsí next game against Sand Creek, Murphy passed for 185 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 96 yards on the ground to get the win. They followed with a 28-21 win against Widefield, where they won on the ground as Murphy and Matt Bastian, also a senior, combined for 286 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The Falcons played Montrose next, and came out of a nail biter, with a 32-23 win, bringing their record to 3-5. On Oct. 30, the Falcons played Mesa Ridge and won, 46-7.†With only one game left in the season for†each team (the first weekend in November), the†Wolves have locked a spot in the playoffs; the†Scorpions have been eliminated from contention. With a last game win, the Falcons could still be in the game!
