The saying, “One life comes in, another goes out” is about transition and the cyclical nature of life. It’s about birth and death, and I experienced both in April. On April 7, my youngest daughter, Laura, and her husband, Josh, welcomed their first child, a boy named Beckham.
On April 16, my dad passed away. He was 85 years old and died peacefully. Dad had a full life, even as he dealt with health issues the past few years. A new individual was born and an older person departed — the cycle of life.
Life is finite but it’s full of experiences, from the beginning to the end. And there’s a lot in the middle like having seven grandchildren! All of my girls are mothers now, and my youngest lives here so I’m lucky to be able to celebrate Mother’s Day, which is May 11, with her. I also have to say Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, who is a loyal reader of The New Falcon Herald. She is 84 and still going strong.
May 5 is Cinco de Mayo. It’s a day to indulge in Mexican culture and food. Cinco de Mayo also commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Be sure to read Erin’s article on Pg. 9 about Sonoro’s Mexican restaurant and retail store in Falcon.
There are a few other celebrations in May as well, as usual there is a day for just about everything. I chose a few to highlight. May 6 is National Teacher Day, which should probably be a holiday. May 20 is World Bee Day — please read Prairie Life on Pg. 14 as Bill Radford talks about beekeeping and the food problems we face if honeybee populations keep decreasing.
May 20 is also National Rescue Dog Day — please check out our Pyrenees rescue dogs on Pg. 18. Please support El Paso County local rescue organizations.
Last but not least, May 26 is Memorial Day. The day is dedicated to honoring and remembering the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Its origins can be traced back to the aftermath of the Civil War, when various communities began holding memorial services for fallen soldiers. Initially known as Decoration Day, it officially became Memorial Day in 1971, following the passage of a law to ensure its observance on the final Monday of May.
In our world today, there is a lot of strife and pain from wars between Ukraine and Russia and Pakistan and Israel. Those wars affect the entire world. In this country, there is anger, discord, division and craziness, but the one thing that is common to all of us is what we owe our military personnel. We are forever grateful to all our military service members.
Erin Wheeler, formerly Erin Malcolm, has been a wonderful addition to our team. But things change, and Erin is moving on. She is a professional photographer and has just been offered a marketing position as well, so she had to make some tough choices. She is a great writer, and we will miss her. Best of luck, Erin!
Ava Stoller, who has authored her dad’s column, Mark’s Meanderings, and written other articles for us, is graduating from college, with a 4.0 GPA. She is also among the top 1% of graduating seniors to receive the university’s Academic Achievement Award. Congratulations, Ava!
Have a wonderful spring, and Happy Mother’s Day to all!
See you in June!
Michelle
Correction
Last month, we published an article on Ahavah Farms. We need to correct the source of our photos. Our writer did not take them — they were submitted by Ahavah. Also, we mistakenly labeled one photo as “geese.” They were ducks! Sorry about those mistakes.
