Sand Creek High SchoolBaseball is now in full swing and Falcon School District 49 teams are fighting desperately for a playoff spot. Sand Creek, on the other hand, is desperate for just a win. At the end of March, their record was a dismal 1-5, with only one win against 2A Kiowa-Simla.April proved to be just as difficult for the Scorpions. They opened the month with an 8-3 loss at Lewis Palmer, and returned home to get trounced by visiting Air Academy, 10-0. April 7, they traveled to Monument to play Palmer Ridge. This game was a nail biter. After seven innings, the teams were tied at 3-3. Sand Creek went scoreless in the eighth, which allowed the Palmer Ridge Bears to edge out the Scorpions by a final score of 4-3. To finish the series, Sand Creek played Palmer Ridge at home, and this time it wasnít so close. Palmer Ridge found their swing and beat Sand Creek 18-6.The Scorpions were on the road again to play Evergreen High School. The Scorpions dropped their seventh in a row by a final score of 8-2. April 14, Sand Creek played their first district game at Vista Ridge. The offense just wasnít there for Sand Creek, leading to another loss at 8-1. Junior Jordan Carter went 2-3 at the plate with a triple to help seal the win for Vista Ridge. The Wolves then showed up at Sand Creek to secure another win, 6-1. Sand Creekís last series before the NFH publishing date was against Cheyenne Mountain. They lost the first game in a 9-0 shutout, and the second as well ó 9-2.The other teams in the district have had a much better season so far.Vista Ridge High SchoolApril 1, Vista Ridge played the second game in the series against Cheyenne Mountain. The Wolves were never able to get enough momentum going and ended up with an 8-3 loss. They returned to Colorado Springs for a game against the Air Academy Kadets. The game went the distance and then some, as the teams needed extra innings to finish this one. In the top of the eighth, the Kadets scored two runs to take the lead. The Wolves couldnít keep up and lost the game 6-8. Much like the Scorpions, extra innings seemed to take the air out of the Wolves. In their next game, the Wolves dropped to Air Academy, 14-4. After that loss, they swept a series against Sand Creek. Their final game before the NFH publishing date was a 12-2 loss to Lewis Palmer, which dropped their record to 5-9 so far this year.Falcon High SchoolFalcon squared off against Air Academy April 1. The Kadets finished their D 49 sweep, with a 14-5 win. The tide seemed to turn when the Falcons traveled to Cheyenne Mountain, and blew them out with a 17-4 win. Senior Wyatt Aaberg had a terrific game, driving in four runs at 2-4 at the plate, with a home run and a double. They followed with another win ó 9-4 ó at home against Cheyenne Mountain. Aaberg continued to roll as he chipped in with two doubles and 2-2 at the plate.The momentum ran out, as they lost their next two games to Discovery Canyon 10-0 and 2-1. For their last series before their district games, the Falcons won against Palmer Ridge 2-0, which brought their record to a respectable 9-7.Girls soccerGirls soccer is also in mid season. The reigning state champion Sand Creek Scorpions sit at a disappointing 3-8, with only four games to go as of this date. The Falcons, however, have improved over last season and currently sit at 7-5, with three games left. Vista Ridge is D 49ís best chance at a postseason berth, with a 9-3 record and only two games left.
