Spring storms upset schedules

GolfThe spring storms have wreaked havoc on Falcon School District 49 sports play.The latest victim was the Cougar (golf) Tournament, originally scheduled April 17 but postponed until April 25.The Marauder Tournament, originally scheduled for April 10, was played April 16 in less-than-perfect weather. “It was really windy, but the girls stuck it out,” said Coach Kristen Woods. “For Lia and Sonia, it was their first varsity tournament.”Zoey Nunn shot a 113, a personal best, to lead the team to a score of 359. The tournament was held at Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs.TrackThe track team has had challenges, too. Practices and meets have been cancelled frequently. However, the boys’ team did well at the Glenn Peterson Invitational at the Air Force Academy on April 12. The team finished third overall, with first place finishes by Keenen Ballage in the 100, Wes Rickman in the 800 and Kevin Johnson in the 3,200. The Falcons, anchored by Ballage, also won the 400 relay.The girls’ team also competed in the April 12 meet, finishing a respectable fourth. The girls competed primarily in the field events, with Sade Lewis winning the triple jump and Kiah Hicks winning the discus.In the 4A Metro championships, held at Garry Berry Stadium April 19, both Falcon teams did well. The boys’ team finished third behind Sierra and Widefield high schools. With Ballage and Rickman dominating their usual events, the other runners in the 100, 1,800 and the 3,200 were running for second place. Falcon’s Kevin Johnson finished second in the 1,800 and 3,200.Bryce Lane helped the Falcons by taking third in the 300 hurdles and the high jump.The D 49 distance coach, Cameron Magnall, said the Falcons have qualified five team members for the state championships, which will take place May 17 and May 18 at the Jefferson County facility.The Lady Falcons have come a long way from the beginning of the season. They placed sixth in the Metro League contest. The girls are gaining experience in the shorter distance dashes and relays and continue to do well in field events, with Hicks again winning the discus. The Falcons’ Michelle Musseau also placed third in the discus event. Jessica Brungardt placed second in shot put, while Hicks took third.Mary Ann Wilson, head track coach, said she wasn’t surprised at Hick’s (a freshman) achievements. “She’s a tremendous athlete,” Wilson said. “The entire girls’ team has really come a long way.” Hicks is currently third on the area leader board in discus.BaseballThe Falcon baseball team continues to have an up-and-down season. The Harrison game scheduled for earlier this month was postponed until April 25. Cody Solberg took on the pitching duties in the April 18 game against Sierra. The Falcons won handily 14-1.However, they lost a doubleheader to Cheyenne Mountain April 19. They were blown out in the first game 22-7 and gave up the second game 16-12, despite the fact that both teams scored 12 hits. The Falcons led 10-8 until the sixth inning when the Indians scored six runs. The sweep puts Cheyenne Mountain into second place in the 4A Metro League.The Falcons rebounded April 22 with a 14-3 win over Mesa Ridge. Pitcher Travis Ewing got the win and helped his own cause by driving in a run and getting two hits out of four times at bat.
