It’s already August, more than halfway through the year and D 49 kids are back in school this week. It is likely most of the students and even some parents are wondering what happened to their summer. They do seem to get shorter.School districts across the country, as well as Colorado and D 49, are facing huge challenges with massive budget cuts that seem to never end. Angie Morlan has been in the neighborhood asking residents what they think about parents paying extra for their children to ride the school buses. She reports on their responses in Streetwise. In the midst of budget cuts we can still take pride in the fact that we continue to attract dedicated and highly motivated teachers to our community. Natalie Gowen writes about one of them, Erik Russell, a fourth-grade teacher from Odyssey Elementary. Russell will spend the next year in Washington, D.C., after being awarded the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship. He is one of only 20 teachers across the United States to win this prestigious award. Imagine what he will bring back to share with his students next year. Congratulations to Mr. Russell!Oftentimes, our reporters and advertising sales reps are stopped and asked how to communicate with the NFH about news that might be of interest to the community. We welcome your news tips and comments any time. If you have a press release, business news, community calendar items, news tips, new babies, wedding announcements, obituaries or rumors; send an e-mail to deb@newfalconherald.com or call Deb at 719-487-8037. We want to hear from you!Look for information in our upcoming issues about the propositions and amendments slated for the November ballot that will have a major impact on school districts. Kathy Wallace will also follow up on the proposed expansion to Powers Boulevard and how it will affect businesses along that corridor.Enjoy our last days of summer, and we will see you in September!Deb, Michelle and the NFH Team
