They’re finally here – those dog days of summer. Time for vacations, backyard barbeques, swimming, farmers’ markets and celebrating America’s birthday. It should be no surprise that it’s also Air Conditioning Appreciation Days, National Ice Cream Month, National Hot Dog Month and National Recreation & Parks Month. What might be a surprise is that July 4 is also Independence from Meat Day. After you read Kathy Hare’s Wild Hare column, you may want to consider celebrating the no-meat holiday as well, or at least think twice about where your beef comes from before you slap it on the grill! There are always the farmers markets for fresh produce – the sight of fresh tomatoes, corn on the cob and Rocky Ford melon might empower the healthy eater side of us. For more, read David Corder’s column and try out his fresh mango pie recipe. In Falcon, we’re fortunate to have a farmers market available on Mondays at the Woodmen Hills Community Center and on Wednesdays at their east recreation center.Along with celebrating the birthday of this great country we live in, we can also celebrate another bumper crop of new businesses in our community. Be sure to read Lindsey Harrison’s article about the latest businesses to open their doors to serve Falcon and the surrounding communities.New businesses hint at a growing economy. Check out Kathy Wallace’s article that points to positive signs that the economy is moving in the right direction.Have a great Fourth of July and we’ll see you in August!-Deb, Michelle and the NFH Team
