On the first Monday in September, workers nationwide celebrate the fruits of their labor. The term “workers” does not only include those who work for wages, but also could be anyone who works for the betterment of society – volunteers, philanthropists, military, mothers, fathers. After all, there are many ways to contribute to the economic and social growth of the United States.According to the United States Department of Labor, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. It is disputed whether Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, or Matthew Maguire, machinist and secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York, initially proposed the holiday. What is clear is that Labor Day has become a tradition of taking a day to relax, have fun with family and friends or catch up on neglected chores. It is a reward for rolling up our sleeves and putting in a year’s worth of hard work.On your day off, you could seek out the plethora of activities offered in our own backyard.
