Face to Face with Megan Joslin

Megan Joslin has experienced more of the world in her 21 years than most people do in their whole lives.Joslin has crewed in a hot air balloon, walked on for a part in the Opera of Leningrad in Paris, attended a graduation party and ran into Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell and had her picture taken with former President George Bush Sr. and his wife, Barbara. She has lived, traveled and studied in nine countries. She speaks Spanish and French fluently. And she’s on her way to more adventures. In June, with her father commissioning her, Joslin was sworn into the U.S. Air Force. The NFH caught up with Joslin while she was visiting her parents in Falcon, before she goes to Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Ala., where she will take part in a six-week air and space basic course. After completing the course, she’ll transfer to Tyndall AFB, in Panama City, Fla., for one year. Joslin will become an air battle manager when she finishes training. When Joslin moves to Tyndall AFB, she will circle back to her place of birth, where, at the time, her father, Randy Joslin, was stationed.Megan Joslin is used to moving with the air force. She attended seven elementary schools before she was 9 years old, at which time the family settled in Falcon.Joslin said the vast array of schools, from public to private and parochial to home schooling, taught her flexibility and gave her a broad perspective of the world. She said she made many friends, and loved each opportunity to start anew.During Joslin’s early childhood, her father served as an assistant embassy air attachÈ (a military diplomat) in France. As part of his job, he interfaced with the French military, and the family often attended large, formal dinners with foreign dignitaries and military officers. Joslin’s mother, Jwan, also hosted dinners and gatherings at their Paris apartment, and she wanted her daughters to experience French culture. She often dressed Megan and older sister Melissa in fancy clothes, taking them out to nice restaurants in Paris. The young girls learned to speak French fluently.Megan Joslin also learned from her mother that moving around with the military meant that friends would come and go but sisters were forever, so the two girls must value their relationship and be kind to one another. Of her sister, Joslin said, “I always had a good friend. She was a good older sister. Sheíd invite me to go with her and would always stick up for me.” Melissa Joslin Jarrett is now a foreign services officer in Warsaw, Poland.Joslin attended Falcon Middle School and Palmer High School, where she was a cheerleader and involved in many activities. Between her sophomore and junior year, she studied Spanish in Costa Rica.In 2001, Joslin graduated from Palmer High School and attended Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, where she graduated cum laude and received a bachelor’s degree in technical journalism (public relations) and a minor in aerospace science. She also received the blue chip award, which grants her special consideration for a master’s degree. And she spent four years in ROTC, graduating with distinction.Although adventure has been Megan’s life, Joslin’s mother, like most mothers of military men and women, is concerned with her combat assignment. She told Megan, “I worked so hard to bring you into this world, and you find all these ways to put yourself in danger.”Just another adventure, mom!More on Megan JoslinHow has Falcon changed since you were 9 years old?Falcon has definitely grown.
