Emilee Marten had been thinking about starting a fundraiser to help out a good cause within the Falcon community. When she heard that the mother of one of her teachers was struggling with breast cancer, Marten decided to support breast cancer research.As a busy eighth-grader, Marten enjoys cheerleading and wake-boarding, but her mother, Tanya Marten, said the chance to help someone in need is “something she’s always been very excited about.”With the help of Falcon Middle School’s student council, Marten put together a bake sale that took place during October’s parent/teacher conferences. All of the donations went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Each donor received pink ribbons, which decorate the school walls in recognition of the donation. The bake sale raised $250.Student council members also came up with the idea of a “Pink Day.” The students were encouraged to wear pink to show support for breast cancer research. Marten initiated “Hat Day” – students wore hats in support of breast cancer research. “I came up with ‘Hat Day’ because when people have breast cancer, they usually lose their hair,” she said.During the daily announcements over the intercom at their school, Marten and a friend presented three facts about breast cancer to the student body, “so that everyone would know a little bit more about breast cancer,” she said.Do you know a child who is a shining star in the community?
