Woodmen Hills open house

Woodmen Hills Metropolitan District held an open house Oct. 28 seeking residents’ ideas on the creation of a recreational master plan for the development.A sign at the open house stated that the goal is to “develop a plan forward that provides a balance between district funding, maintenance resources and long-term community vision.”Ideas ranged from affordable projects, such as planting more trees and improving trails within the development, to expensive projects like building a gymnasium, said Parry Thomas, of Thomas & Thomas, which is helping the district prepare the plan.Other ideas included racquet ball and tennis courts, a dog park and an inline skating park.Funding for new recreational facilities would come from the park and recreation fee paid by every Woodmen Hills property owner and program fees paid by residents and non-residents, Thomas said.Additional funding could come from grants from El Paso County, the Conservation Trust Fund and Great Outdoors Colorado.Jim Houk, who works for Thomas & Thomas, said there will be another open house in January to collect more ideas from residents.Thomas & Thomas will use the ideas to prepare a draft recreational master plan in 2011, he said.
