January D 49 board meeting update

The D 49 board of education monthly meeting was held on Jan. 11, with about 50 people in attendance. The meeting began with Mike Gray, manager of the Wal-Mart on Woodmen Road, and Katrina McPheron, Wal-Mart community coordinator, presenting a check for $1,000 to R.J. Berry on behalf of the district’s transportation department for Santa’s Toy Express.In celebration of January as “National School Board Recognition” month, D 49 interim Superintendent Nancy Wright gave each BOE member a “golden apple award” and a certificate in appreciation of their commitment to the district.Horizon Middle School choir students sang “Siyahamta,” an African freedom song, in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday – Jan. 15.Sandy Collins, director of secondary learning services, presented new course proposals for the new Health Academy at Falcon High School. Students will receive credit for both high school and Pikes Peak Community College courses, which include the following: certified nurse aide, advanced certified nurse aide, EMS first responder and EMT basic. Classes will start the 2007-2008 school year.The board unanimously approved the following action items:

  • A trip in May for Evans Elementary fifth graders to YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colo.
  • The purchase of Gallup TeacherInsight to aide in recruiting teachers
  • A new course proposal for Falcon High School and Sand Creek High School
  • Approval of long range planning committee members
Karen Hobson, D 49 liaison to the El Paso Council Parent Teacher Association, presented the Reflections Program, a National PTA program that encourages participation in the arts. Based on an annual theme, students can enter any or all of the following categories: visual arts, photography, literature, musical composition, dance/choreography and film/video. Entries were received from students at Falcon High School, Skyview Middle School, Falcon Middle School, Remington Elementary, Meridian Ranch Elementary and Woodmen Hills Elementary. Sixteen entries placed in the top-five of their respective categories and will now go to the Colorado PTA for further judging.The next regular BOE meeting is Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the central administration building at 10850 E. Woodmen Road.
