StrongWomen training program

The Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Office in El Paso County is hosting a StrongWomen Training Program on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.The StrongWomen program was developed by Miriam Nelson, PhD, is an associate professor at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The program is based on years of research on how strength training and proper nutrition improve the health of women of all ages. “Strength is a critical factor in living healthier, more active lives. Our research shows that a program of strength training not only improves bone density but reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms, and increases flexibility and strength,” Nelson said. The program is appropriate for sedentary and active women.Participants who complete the training program will be given a certificate and provided with the tools to assist them with beginning StrongWomen classes in the community. It is suggested that those who attend be in good health and committed to help bring more of these programs to other women. The event will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 219 East Bijou Street, and the cost is $98.00, which includes a program tool kit, breakfast, lunch and snacks. The program includes information and a discussion on how to arrange classes, exercise instruction and opportunities to practice exercises with trained professionals. Weights will also be available. You must register by Sept.1, and appropriate clothing, a towel or exercise mat is advised.Call 636-8920 or send an e-mail to Sheilabarry@elpasoco.com for a registration form.
