The June fire safety tip is from Lt. Brian Deckard. Like many firefighters, the job runs in his family. Deckard said he decided to become a fireman because his father and his brother also were firemen. Before coming to the FFPD five years ago, Deckard was a hospital emergency room technician, a skill he puts to use as a firefighter. What he likes most about his job is that he can be there for people in a time of need. On his off time, Deckard is all in for the outdoors and enjoys hiking and bicycling. His safety tip: Do not throw lit cigarette butts out the car window. Heed burn restrictions and outdoor fires should be confined in a safe area, with a distance of 6 feet between the fire and any flammable material.Correction: In the May issue, Joan Hathcockís name was misspelled. We apologize to Joan.
