St. Benedict Catholic Church held its fourth annual barn dance in September, with almost 250 in attendance. The event included a silent auction, live auction, dinner and dancing.Deacon Lynn Sherman said in years past, members of the community have pulled together to cook the meal for the event; but this year was different. Students from the culinary arts program at Patriot High School in Falcon School District 49 prepared the meal, from start to finish, he said.ìThe students did the whole thing,î Sherman said. ìThey prepared everything from doing the ordering based on how many people we were going to have, preparing the food and also serving it. It was very well-received.îGuests also had a chance to bid on the 26 different baskets, each with their own theme, available during the silent auction. Sherman said three highly-coveted live auction items were available, including a picture on canvas of the Maroon Bells in Aspen by Kevin Sutherland; four tickets for the Animal Encounters experience at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo; and four tickets to the Tim McGraw concert at Falcon Stadium at the United States Air Force Academy Sept. 17.The St. Benedictís Womenís Club also held their annual bake sale. All proceeds from the event, after expenses, will go into the construction fund for St. Benedictís new church, Sherman said. Currently, masses are held at the gym in the Patriot High School.ìTechnically, we are taking a barn and turning it into a church,î Sherman said. ìIf everything goes well, we are hoping for a construction start date in the late spring of 2017. Construction will take four to six months.îSherman said the event was a success and the type of celebration that fits the community. ìWe were very pleased with how everything turned out,î he said.
