The American Legion Dane R. Balcon Post 2008 held its fifth annual golf tournament at Antler Creek golf course in Falcon Aug. 11. The tournament is in honor of Dane R. Balcon, a Sand Creek High School graduate from 2006, who was killed in Iraq in September 2007.The first tournament to honor Balcon was held at the Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club on Fort Carson, said Bob Levesque, post commander for the Legion and event coordinator for the tournament since its inception in 2008.ìI was approached by a member of the American Legion and he said they were considering naming it (the Legion) after him,î said Carla Sizer, Balconís mother. ìThey approached me with the concept of the golf tournament, and I was more than willing to be a part of it. It would be a great way to give back to the community.îLevesque said this yearís tournament was a huge success. ìWe had a total of 10 teams of four people per team,î he said. Following the tournament, the golfers were treated to a luncheon, and some received prizes donated by sponsors.ìWe awarded prizes to the longest drive, closest to the pin and had all the par four holes covered with hole-in-one prizes,î Levesque said.Sponsors included Kevin Koenke, Falcon State Farm; Charlie Brownís Goodtime Travel, Dickís Sporting Goods, the Denver Broncos, Ruby Tuesday and Alpine Vision in Falcon. ìThe funds we generate provide capital for our post to support other community activities,î Levesque said.
