First is the big news: the post office relocation! I think this is the most exciting happening since Safeway came to town. I don’t know how many times people have asked us through the years, “When are we going to get a post office in Falcon?” Well, it just might happen sooner than we thought.

The NFH front page this month is all about closing the Peyton post office and relocating it somewhere, which could be Falcon. As noted on the front page, it makes sense for the post office to be located where most of the people live on the eastern plains. Falcon’s growth exploded in the late 1990s and a post office is certainly warranted in our area. As I mentioned, we’ve been talking about it since the newspaper started in 2004. So, if you haven’t already, get on board and tell the postal service and Congressman Jeff Crank that Falcon should be the new home of the post office. Maybe everyone doesn’t want the post office, but we’re betting the majority do.

On a completely different topic, I wanted to mention a couple of things about rescue dogs. We did a story a while back about Pyrescue (Great Pyrenees Rescue) in Peyton closing its doors. It’s happening — soon. There are still dogs that need homes. If you have space in your heart and your home or you know someone who does, please contact Pyrescue (Pyrenees and Pyrenees mixed dogs). They are always in our newspaper with cute, adoptable dogs every month. Check it out on Pg.   . Give a dog a bone … give a dog a home.

About 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. About 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats). It is sad, and there has got to be more that we can do to lower these statistics. One thing we can do is adopt an animal from a shelter — don’t go to pet stores or purchase an animal online — they might look like they are fancy and AKC registered but the dogs, especially, often come from backyard breeders. If you want a specific breed, you can often find one by checking with organizations for those breeds like the Golden Retriever Foundation.

National Mill Dog Rescue, an animal welfare organization based out of Peyton, recently rescued 165 dogs from the Western Slope. They referred to the rescue as “the worst situation we’ve ever seen,” according to a July 17 Gazette article. The dogs were “living in small, filthy outdoor enclosures, caked with muck and fecal matter.” They were matted so badly that some were unable to walk.

The Gazette article stated that officials believed the dogs had been used for commercial breeding; their puppies likely sold in pet stores or online. All of the dogs are miniature Schnauzers, except for one pug.

The dogs are now being cared for at the rescue’s Peyton location; when they are healthy, they will be up for adoption. Check out NMDR at https://nmdr.org.

Adopting a dog (or cat) is a wonderful way to help our companion animals.

On a brighter note (maybe not for some kids), school will soon be back in session. Meanwhile, enjoy the dog days and end of summer. Good luck to all the teachers, students and parents.

Thanks for reading and don’t forget to contact the post office.

See you in September.
