Friends of Falcon Update

Submitted

The latest Friends of Falcon meeting took place May 31; despite the light attendance, it was packed with valuable information. Chairman Kevin Curry opened the meeting by sharing the group’s efforts to attract much-needed businesses to the area. Friends of Falcon recently sent letters to the corporate offices of Baskin Robbins, Landry’s Restaurant Group and both Hilton Hotels and International Hotels Group. Hilton promptly responded, thanking the group and advising that future efforts be directed toward potential franchisees, as their growth model relies on independent ownership.

While identifying such individuals in advance can be challenging, it’s a promising direction.

Kevin also provided updates on two key local issues:

1) El Paso County Land Development Code update: The county is in the process of updating its Land Development Code, which governs zoning, density, infrastructure and more. Public input is encouraged at each stage. Residents are urged to review draft updates and share feedback at http://www.elpasocountyldc.com.

2) Housing Needs Assessment Survey: A recent survey focused on housing needs in Colorado Springs and unincorporated county areas posed a crucial question — should officials prioritize affordable housing (which could require rezoning and increased density) or uphold current homeowners’ rights (potentially limiting affordable options)? Friends of Falcon supports the latter, emphasizing the importance of preserving the area’s rural-urban balance. Although the survey closed June 13, Friends of Falcon will continue to monitor and report on developments.

Our guest speaker, Ruth Prentice, presented information about the Toastmasters program. She and Taniza Sultana, Friends of Falcon board member, are long-time members and know the value not just to the members but to the entire community. Ruth highlighted the program’s emphasis on continuous personal growth — not only in public speaking but also in listening and everyday communication. Toastmasters, she noted, benefits both individuals and the broader community. The Falcon Toastmasters website (toastmasters.org/find-a-club/07888594) has more information.

Following the guest speaker’s presentation, the open discussion raised two key topics for Friends of Falcon to consider. First was a recommendation to focus outreach on local restaurant groups and independent owners, rather than just national chains. Since local restaurateurs are more familiar with the area, they might be more open to expanding here. The second topic echoed a familiar concern: Our elected officials need to engage more with their constituents. Kevin emphasized that the only way to change this dynamic is for residents to get involved. Friends of Falcon aims to help by keeping the community informed about opportunities to take action.
