It is back to school for Falcon School District 49 students, which means high school football is also back. After a long off season, featuring many departures for each team, the Falcons, Wolves and Scorpions are ready to challenge their rivals for a playoff spot this season.Vista Ridge opened their season on Sept. 4 against Northglen. The Wolves started their season off with a bang in this one, dropping 48 points while holding their opponent to 21 for the win. Starting quarterback Elway Tubbs did his part, throwing for 267 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Next, came Pueblo West on Sept. 11, and it turned into a lopsided win for Vista as they destroyed the Cyclones 55-7. Tubbs threw for over 250 yards and four touchdowns. Vista Ridge continued to pour on the points in their third game Sept. 18. Once again, senior Tubbs led the way with 416 passing yards and six touchdowns against Ponderosa. The Wolves improved to 3-0 on the season with a 57-35 win. This has definitely been an impressive start for Vista Ridge.Sand Creek, on the other hand, has had a poor start to their year. On Sept. 4, they played against the Palmer Ridge Bears, and the game was over from the start ó leading to a 51-21 blowout. The next game was just as underwhelming. The Scorpions dropped this one, 49-7, against Lewis Palmer. On Sept. 18, the Scorpions squared off against Aurora Central. This game was close, but in the end Sand Creek dropped their third straight to start their season. The Scorpions played Air Academy Sept. 25, and lost 38-14.On Sept. 4, Falcon opened their season against the team that ended their last season, Pine Creek. The Eagles formed a brick wall on defense and were able to hold the Falcons to only 32 yards rushing, on 25 attempts. The Falcons suffered a repeat of last year, as they lost this game 35-13. The following week, the Falcons played No. 2 ranked Longmont in a non-conference game. Falcon had 49 yards more of total offense, but poor execution led to a disappointing 45-26 loss. Their third game against the Pueblo West Cyclones in Pueblo was painful, losing 34-26 and dropping them to 0-3 ó a difficult position to start the season. This first month has been a surprise for all three teams in the district. Vista Ridge has had unexpected success, while Sand Creek and Falcon have failed to live up to expectations thus far. But the season is young, so anything can happen.
