Soaring in the breeze, with adults and families watching tiny homemade kites flutter overhead; those works of art were mixed with gigantic, ferocious monster kites as big as a compact automobile. It was a magnificent display at Falcon Regional Park on Eastonville Road on June 18. El Paso County Parks and Recreation, Meridian Ranch, Woodmen Hills and the Girl Scouts of Colorado sponsored the event.Under the direction of Ryan Dorough, recreation program planner for the El Paso County Parks and Recreation, 650 people watched as the owners and their kites made good use of a windy day.Dorough, who is new to the job, has a masterís degree in recreation and leisure services. He has coordinated numerous activities such as weddings, camping retreats, outdoor expeditions and much more.Although the Kite & Wind Festival was a first-time event, it will not be the last, he said. Dorough said future events are being scheduled for Homestead Ranch Regional Park, Fountain Creek Regional Park, Paint Mines Interpretive Park, Fox Run Regional Park, and Bear Creek.
