Falcon Scouts collect over six tons of food

The annual ìScouting for Foodî drive in April is the capstone community project of the Pikes Peak Boy Scout Council. Boy Scout Troop 149 of Falcon has consistently brought in the most food by far during the last few years, helping those in need within their own community. Every year since 2010, they have broken their previous yearís record. This year, with the help of Packs 149, 159, and 231, they collected 13,278 pounds of food!More than 100 volunteers, including Scouts, siblings, parents and friends put in 993 hours for this yearís drive. Work included preparing and distributing bags with flyers that were set out at homes all over the Falcon area. On April 18, the Scouts collected all the food, brought it to High Plains Helping Hands, and helped sort it.Randy Blevins, who has organized the drive each year, said, ìSeems like the Falcon area is starting to realize that this is just something they get to be a part of every April, and they seem to give more and more.î Each year, the food is given to the HPHH food pantry, which serves needy families in Falcon and the area. The food from the drive arrives each year to carry the pantry through the late spring and summer, when there typically are no drives.Thank you to all in the Falcon community for the support and to all the Scouts and volunteers who assisted with the drive. This food drive is always the biggest one-day donation the pantry receives all year, and we are greatly appreciative. The pantry is located on the campus of Mountain Springs Church at 7375 Adventure Way, near Woodmen and Black Forest road. The pantry is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the third Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The phone number is 719-495-3123.
