The Daniels Fund organization awarded three Sand Creek High School students with full-ride scholarships to any accredited nonprofit college or university in the United States. The recipients were selected from a four-state region, including Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The NFH talked to two out of the three recipients. Philip Garcia declined an interview, but said he will be attending the University of Boulder to study computer science.Pierce DaviesPierce Davies said he plans to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder and study engineering, but he has not decided between mechanical or electrical engineering. ìOver the course of this school year, Iíve worked with a team of six students on developing products and obtaining an international patent,î he said. Using that knowledge, Davies said he might become an entrepreneur or go to school for a masterís degree in business administration.Davies said receiving the scholarship was a huge relief because he no longer has to worry about the financial aspect of college, and can focus on his education. ìIt is so surreal when I think about it,î Davies said. ìItís an amazing opportunity, and Iím really grateful to them for giving it to me.îPhillip DupreePhillip Dupree said he plans to attend Texas A&M University and study chemical engineering. He said one reason he felt he stood out among the other applicants was the electronic music club he and a friend started at Sand Creek High School during their sophomore year. ìWe had to raise the money to buy the equipment,î Dupree said. ìWe really loved electronic music. It was a great experience and a big part of our lives.îAfter obtaining his bachelorís degree, Dupree said he is open to different options like job internships in his field of study or working on developing nanotechnology. ìThe Daniels Fund is really cool because they stay connected with you,î he said. ìThey help you find a job or an internship.
