El Paso County Colorado District 49

Annual progress report

Each year, Falcon School District 49’s learning services division makes a presentation to the Board of Education about the progress it has made with the support of teachers, staff and school administrators. This year’s update was particularly impressive. In addition to achieving goals set around curriculum alignment, the district is working to enhance leadership development within the organization through programs such as the Leadership Academy, which offers an opportunity to earn credit through Adams State College; the Principals’ Induction Program, a complete orientation and development program for new principals in D 49 and beyond; and an in-house master’s degree program in partnership with local institutions. Together, these programs help support D 49 teachers and staff to enable them to achieve personal career goals.Another project undertaken by learning services is the selection of new textbooks that were chosen through an inclusive community feedback process. This process allowed parents and students the opportunity to preview books and provide feedback to make final recommendations to the Board of Education. The division also sets goals for character education, outlining four major areas of focus, including respect, responsibility, integrity and caring. These values are being integrated into all D 49 schools.Since 2004, Grants and Fund Development has secured more than $2.2 million in support from the public and private sectors to help fund key programs that enrich the lives of our students. In the special education department, students have achieved CSAP scores above the state average. The graduation rate and post-graduation outcomes for our special education students are also above the state average. This is just a sample of successes made during the past year.
