2005-2005 Falcon High Sports coming to an end

The 2004-2005 year at Falcon High School has ended. There have been good times and bad, tears and smiles. This has been a monumental sports season for Falcon High. Teams have gone further than in past years, and the pride in the Falcon athletics is phenomenal.Football gets a big round of applause. With heart, they’ve had the best season in five years. Breaking records and conjuring up a few all-conference players, this was the season to brag about. New Head Coach Jason Catron will have some big shoes to fill.Volleyball ended its season 28 points away from the state competition. Under a new coaching staff, the Lady Falcons showed their determination every time they stepped on the court. The girls have set the bar for next season – maybe state is in the future. Also under a new coaching staff, softball had bragging rights this year as well, finishing with a 9-5 season and a KRDO champion. Genelle Martinez was honored by KRDO Champions as the top softball player in the Pikes Peak Region because of her outstanding academic and softball achievements.State dance and cheer teams were successful competitors, with high hopes for more. But it was a young team, one that will only improve and show Falcon what they’re made of.Boy’s basketball worked hard every time they’re sneakers touched the gym floor. Hours of perfecting every skill paid off when the Falcons beat the former unbeatable Harrison team. Expectations for this team were high, and the boys stepped up. Coming together as a team was the solution to this victorious season.Girl’s basketball should not be forgotten either. With a spectacular start, the girls’ commitment and determination showed they should not be underestimated. They grew as a team and will continue to shine, no doubt.Wrestling is one tough sport. Between making weight requirements and maintaining a commitment, not everyone is able to participate. Falcon wrestling had a rough start, but finished with a stronger team. The dedication and confidence contributed to this team’s success. Even though wrestling is an individual sport, they must work as a team to win the match. As a young team this year, the wrestling program should thrive in seasons to come.Baseball is a sport for all seasons. No one quite knew what to expect when they got ready for practice. If the weather was bad, the boys would practice inside, and if the weather was great, outside. The team became strong as one early. The love of the game and dedication kept them together, and the coaches couldn’t ask for more.Out-of-school sports, like soccer and tennis, made a mark. Soccer and tennis ended seasons in the regional competitions.Freshman Trevor Wallner swims for Liberty High School, and he is going to state this year.Track and field prompted a few state champions this spring – 10. Nick White and Caroline Ratterree placed second in the 2-mile event, Eric Hensley placed third and Jessica Brungardt placed second in shot put. Trevor Gochenour placed third in discus; Rachel Thomas placed first (she has the second best time in the state), and Ashley Jelitto, Rachel Thomas, Tari-Ann Yates and Cassie Lane are going to state for the 800 medley relay. They placed in regionals, which guaranteed their advancement to state. As the season ends, strong senior leaders graduate and some will play college sports while others will have glorious memories. The Falcon community has seen things they never expected from Falcon High School. From football to track, the school spirit has shifted from slightly enthusiastic to fanatic. Falcon used to be a small town in the middle of nowhere, but now we are the competition. The sports programs of Falcon High School will continue to grow and become stronger. Next year will only add on to this year’s success. Good luck to the 2005-2006 athletes.
