Pikes Peak Library Happenings

The Pikes Peak Library District is joining with public libraries around the country in commemoration of Sept. 11. As part of “The September Project,” which is a collection of people, groups and organizations working together to create a day of engagement, conversation and democracy, the East Library at 5550 N. Union Blvd. will not close on Sept. 11; instead, it will offer the public an opportunity to explore historical and current viewpoints regarding American freedoms. The 24-hour commemoration is part of “Celebrating Our American Liberties,” a month of programs and events planned at PPLD for all ages, featuring historic character portrayals, panel discussions, children’s activities and more.PPLD is committed to building community around public conversation and interaction. “This is a seminal project that public libraries have taken the initiative on nationally,” said Executive Director JosÈ Aponte. “Historically, public libraries have served as cornerstones to American democracy. Going forward, we need to continue to serve as the public space for discourse and contemplation of truth regarding the values and responsibilities inherent to American democracy in a changing world.”Additional information about local and national activities can be found by visiting www.theseptemberproject.org.
