Kite Festival flies high

By Kevin Curry, president Friends of Falcon

Several colorful kites fly in the blue sky above a rural landscape with a dirt road, grassy fields, and distant structures under scattered clouds.

The El Paso County Kite Festival was held at Falcon Regional Park on June 20. Mild sunshine and a moderate breeze created perfect conditions, and the dozens of kites soaring overhead provided the first clue that the event was both well attended and enjoyable.

Children and adults alike filled the sky with kites ranging from small, simple designs to large, elaborate creations. Vendors were on-site offering food, while El Paso County hosted multiple booths featuring activities and information. Attendees could purchase kites for $10, there was a space to design and build kites and there were games for children. Looking around, it was clear that both kites and family fun were soaring.

Skye Bogle, a county representative for the festival, said this was the fifth annual event. Falcon Regional Park was chosen in part because of the consistent winds that sweep across the Eastern Plains. Bogle said attendance last year totaled about 1,000 people, and this year’s turnout would likely match or exceed that number.

She also noted that the Kite Festival is just one of many events sponsored by the county throughout the year. A complete list of events is available on the El Paso County Parks website at https://parks.elpasoco.com/el-paso-county-nature-centers/special-events.

Overall, the El Paso County Kite Festival offered a wonderful glimpse into the community spirit of the Falcon area and provided a great opportunity for family fun.

See you next year.
