Colorado bill to delay wildfire code dies in committee

By Robin Widmar

Colorado House Bill 26-1334 — “Modify Standards of Wildfire Resiliency Code Board” has been postponed indefinitely. Following a committee hearing April 7, the Transportation, Housing and Local Government committee voted to end the bipartisan bill’s progress.

Among other provisions, HB 26-1334 would have delayed local government adoptions of the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code until April 1, 2027. Some stakeholders had argued the 2026 adoption timeline was too rushed. With the bill’s defeat, the existing requirements remain, including the April 1, 2026, adoption date and a July 1, 2026, implementation deadline.

At their April 8 meeting, the Falcon Fire Protection District board postponed adoption of the CWRC and will readdress the matter at the May meeting. In an email dated April 15, FFPD Chief Trent Harwig wrote, “The district is following changes the CWRC Board is making to the Code.” He added that the FFPD board is “looking into the requirements to change the map and waiting for the rule making from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control on the state providing enforcement support.”
