Garage sales: 10 tips to turn clutter into cash

By Robin Widmar

Spring cleaning can result in piles of unwanted items and the idea of holding a garage sale. A well-run sale can quickly turn clutter into cash, but the best sales rely on the basics: planning, clear prices and a setup that helps shoppers browse easily. Here are tips to ensure a successful event.

  1. Start planning early. Allow time to sort, clean and group items to make setup easier.
  1. Check local and HOA rules. Confirm whether permits are needed and note any HOA restrictions, including limits on signs and hours, before advertising the sale.
  2. Set dates and times, then stick to them. Weekend mornings tend to draw the most traffic. Open on time, and be prepared for early birds.
  3. Advertise widely. Consider posting on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and Nextdoor, as well as sites specific to garage sales. Include the dates, hours and address. Mention big categories (kids’ clothes, tools, furniture) and any standout items. Add photos to draw interest.
  4. Post signs that are sturdy, colorful and readable. Put signs at key turns and intersections where drivers can safely read them. Avoid attaching signs to utility poles. Use large, bold lettering and clear arrows. Take down signs when the sale ends.
  5. Price for sale, not sentiment. Price items individually, use color-coded stickers or post one price for similar items. Use round numbers for simplicity. Bundling items (“3 for $1” or “fill a bag for $5”) can move books and small items quickly. Create a “free” box for giveaways and items that may not sell.
  6. Stage it like a store. Place like items together, put small goods on tables and hang clothes when possible. A tidy display appeals to buyers more than a pile of random stuff.
  7. Have change and supplies. Stock small bills and coins. A calculator, pens, tape, bags and paper for wrapping fragile items also come in handy.
  8. Think about safety. Keep the house locked, and do not allow strangers inside. Safeguard cash and move large bills out of sight as they are received.

Have a plan for unsold items. Decide in advance whether unsold items will be donated, recycled, trashed or listed online. Then schedule a time for drop-offs.
