October has arrived, and it is arguably the best month of the year. It’s a beautiful time of the year, crisp and cool (for the most part), colorful with hues of gold and red. It’s the prelude to inarguably the craziest time of the year — the holiday season.

We’re seeing Halloween decorations and pumpkin everything in August now. Target brought out their Halloween-themed goods in August. Starbucks came out with their popular pumpkin spice latte, which debuted in 2003, on Aug. 22, two days earlier than last year. Starbucks also offers a pumpkin cream cheese muffin, pumpkin cream cold brew and iced pumpkin cream chai. Pumpkin addicts like our editor cherish this time of year.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide; two million new cases are diagnosed each year. The good news is that breast cancer deaths have decreased by 43% since1989 in the U.S. If breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is 99%.

About the NFH this month, we have finally been able to garner some statistics on crime in the area. Jon Huang did plenty of research and came up with information that is available to the public.

Be sure to read the Friends of Falcon column on Pg.  The county is reviewing their El Paso County Land Development Code, which governs development and land use. FoF was one of just a few organizations/persons invited to a meeting hosted by the county to review the current land code. But everyone has an opportunity to weigh in on the land code regulations. Check it out.

We have talked to the Friends of Falcon president, Kevin Curry, about the possibility of  hosting a “meeting of the minds.” FoF, the Eastern Plains Chamber of Commerce and all the service organizations like the Exchange Club are community oriented. I would just like to throw this idea out for consideration. Do you think your organization would like to participate in a “meeting of the minds” to discuss ideas and ways to build a sense of community in Falcon? Any individual resident interested in being involved is welcome, too. Please send a note to me or Marylou (see our email addresses on Pg. 3)

Finally, Terry Stokka veered a bit from his normal column and wrote an opinion piece in Land & Water. The topic is climate change, and Terry presents his views. Next month in the NFH, we will present a different view on climate change.

Enjoy October!

See you in November!

Michelle

Correction: In last month’s article, “The discord continues,” we stated the source of water for the Lazy Y Rockin J Campground was the Dawson Aquifer. We misquoted Scott Smith, who in the interview said the source of water is the Denver Aquifer. We apologize.

From the article: “She is worried about water and sewer, and (Scott) Smith has addressed that by stating the neighboring residents get their water from the Dawson aquifer and the park water will come from the Denver aquifer.”
