Although July 4 is over, our front page reflects the ongoing spirit of Americana as we celebrate the Falcon High School baseball team’s third place finish in the statewide championship. Also, the Pop Warner Falcon Raptors football and cheer and dance program is hosting a variety of activities this summer and gearing up for a successful football season that starts Aug. 1.

Recently, I ran across a quote that reminded me of what we have to look forward to in the near future. “The windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror, because where we are going is more important than where we have been.”

That quote is so meaningful today as we approach yet another presidential election. We can’t keep looking out the rearview mirror and undoing years and years of progress — progress that was made only through a bipartisan government. We need to vote to ensure that people we elect will work together — Democrats, Republicans and Independents — for the good of our country.

Well, sometimes it’s fun to look in the rearview mirror when it doesn’t involve politics. We’ve added a new column to the NFH. It’s called Yesteryear, a look at Falcon and eastern plains history. Coben Scott is our new writer (be sure to read his introduction and the article on Pg. 4); he is a great researcher of the bygone days. This month is all about the history of Homestead Ranch.

Our columnists will entertain you and keep you thinking. While Bill Radford talks about baby chicks, Terry Stokka discusses his theory on how the Black Forest Fire started. Ava Stoller wrote her column from London so take a trip vicariously with her.

Aaron Berscheid from Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds us that interfering with nature can be detrimental to nature.

Pete Gawda, one of our seasoned journalists and the reporter we relied on for development issues, is retiring. In his words, “I am a recovering journalist. I am in detox trying to get the printer’s ink out of my blood.” Have a great retirement, Pete.

Have a good rest of your summer — it’s winding down.

See you in August, – Michelle
