Safety tip ó from firefighter Sean Lynch

ìThe sense of brotherhoodî and ìhelping other peopleî are what motivated Sean Lynch to become a firefighter.Lynch, who works out of Station 4, grew up in upstate New York, where each little crossroad village has its own volunteer fire department. After a ìgoî at selling insurance, he decided to become a firefighter. Last spring, Lynch attended the firefighting academy sponsored by Falcon Fire Protection District. He spent four months as a volunteer before he was hired full-time.ìThis is what I want to be doing,î Lynch said. ìIt’s a lot different from any other job. No two calls are the same.îA recent visit to Station 4 found Lynch preparing for an advancement to driver/operator. He was using toy vehicles in a simulated accident to learn how to position a fire truck in that type of situation.Lynch is married; he met his wife in college. In his off-duty hours, he stays busy doing maintenance around the house and pursuing his second (firefighting is his first) favorite activity: playing rugby.Fire safety tipAlways check your smoke detector to see if it is outdated. Look at the date on the device to make sure it is still current. Lynch said not only will the fire detector ìchirpî when the battery is dead, it also will ìchirpî when it is outdated.
