More power to the eastern plains

Mountain View Electric Association Inc. is bringing more power to Falcon and Rush ó those substations are both in the process of getting upgraded transformers. To do this, mobile substations were brought in to carry the power while the upgrades are completed. MVEA and Tri-State Generation & Transmission brought in the mobile substation for Falcon; the Rush mobile substation was a joint effort between MVEA and partnering Colorado cooperatives, Y-W Electric Association and Highline Electric Association.Substantial growth in the areas, along with the anticipation of future development, prompted the upgrades.ìThe Falcon Substation thatís being upgraded was built in the 70s and was designed to serve about 3,500 members,î said Jason Matzke, MVEA general foreman. ìThe new transformer will be able to serve approximately 10,000 members.îThe Rush Substation upgrade is mostly a conversion to newer technology and equipment, but it will also have additional capacity for future residents.Rocky Ferran, MVEA system engineer II, said, “This project will allow for future growth and a greater ability to serve our membersí power needs. As the distribution system in the Rush area is rebuilt, the new transformer will improve service reliability and has the potential to reduce the duration of service interruptions along rural lines.”Both projects have a combined cost of about $3 million, and will be completed by the end of January.
