This year, I think Halloween will be scarier than ever ñ as the presidential election gets closer. I wonder how many people will haunt the Halloween parties in Donald and Hillary costumes? We only have about six weeks left for the, as Trump would say, very, very big Election Day. The media is going to have a heyday Nov. 8. And some media networks would like to provide results as they come in from the polls. They want to be able to ìcallî the election before the polls close in the western states. I donít think that is fair to voters; however, the NFH might as well get a jump on the outcome, too. All we have are the polls, not actual votes, but today we are calling the election a tie. Trump and Clinton will be co-commanders-in-chief. Remember who called it first!About the elections: Lindsey Harrison and Jason Gray have written informative briefs on the ballot amendments. (Jason covered the health care measure in the September issue of the NFH.) This month, we have eye-opening articles on horse slaughter by Breeanna Jent and packs of dogs wreaking havoc with livestock by Jason Gray. Also, we have a new addition to our writing team, Shelli Mader, who lives in Falcon. Shelli interviewed a young Falcon D 49 student and her mother about the issues related to diagnosing and treating cancer in children. Welcome aboard, Shelli. It is hard to believe that October is here and the holidays are just around the corner. I am wondering how the holidays are going to play out this year, considering the election, the continued threat of terrorism, battle-weary soldiers and people, displaced refugees ñ and increased racial tensions in the U.S.My oldest daughter, Megan, and her husband and 2-year-old daughter live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Megan and my granddaughter have been ìholed upî in their house for three days, as I write this, because of the racial tension and violence that has erupted in Charlotte. The governor called a state of emergency, and Megan told me many businesses closed down.I was pretty young when the race riots happened in the 60s and early 70s, but our editor recalled being locked down for an entire weekend in her college dorm as rioters and police took over the campus. She said it was unbelievable watching out her dorm window as tear gas clouded the skies and bloodied people lay on the ground. Are we going backward?Be safe this October, especially on Halloween, and send us a photo of Donald and Hillary.– Michelle
