Sequins and Spurs: a growing event

On Flag Day, June 14, St. Benedict Catholic Church in Falcon hosted the second annual Sequins and Spurs barbeque and barn dance. Lynn Sherman, deacon and parish director, said the event highlights the parish and its community activities.ìWe do this for the community,î Sherman said. ìItís an outreach and a community thing. It lets folks know weíre here.îMike Force, chairman of the capital campaign committee and member of the development steering committee, said, ìCreating awareness of the church is a big challenge.î The parish currently has 125 active families, and members continually meet people who drive into Colorado Springs for worship because they do not know about the St. Benedict parish. The parish is the only one in the diocese that houses a barn on its property; thus, the barn dance theme. The parish has plans to convert the barn into their worship space, and they hope to start construction within the next year to year and a half, Force said. They currently meet in the Falcon School District 49 Patriot Learning Centerís gymnasium.More than 500 people attended this yearís Sequins and Spurs event, an increase from last yearís event by at least 200 people, said Doug Burrer, chairman of the finance council and the finance committee. The women of St. Benedictís held a bake sale at the event, and a silent auction raised more than $1,300 for the church. They also held a live auctionfor a four-person hunt for Rocky Mountain roosters (quail, pheasants, chukar), which raised more than $900. Event goers includedfamilies and plenty of kids. They sat at large tables and talked with friends and new acquaintances during the buffet-style barbeque. After dinner, they moved 15 tables and danced until midnight.
