Do you know what to do if someone around you has symptoms of a stroke or heart attack? Jim Rebitski, assistant chief of the Black Forest Fire/Rescue Protection District answered these questions in a presentation at the Black Forest AARP Chapterís February meeting at the Black Forest Lutheran Church. The presentation featured the time-critical identification and responses by family or individuals and medical responders that can save lives, or at least minimize the negative aspects of these all-too common types of medical emergencies. The presentation also identified lifestyle risk factors and corrective measures that individuals must consider if they want to reduce the chance of a heart attack or stroke.A discussion of the types and use of Automated External Defibrillators and personal Home Medical Alert Systems was an informative addition to the program.After the noon potluck meal, Lt. Scott MacDonald, also from the Black Forest Fire and Rescue, presented the program ìWinter Fire Safety.î The program highlighted potential fire hazards from fireplaces, portable heaters and electrical heating devises. A short chapter business meeting followed the program.Persons of all ages are invited to join the Black Forest AARP Chapter.
