D 49 governance

Dear Editor,It appears to me that the biggest issue affecting D 49 is the governance at the Board level.†While the historic and present concern are always focusing on the individual board members, my observation has led me to believe that it is the structure of the board that needs to be changed for more effective representation.†My thought would be to:1. Change the number of elected Board Members from 5 to 7.† This would take the pressure off of the existing board by spreading the responsibility over a larger group.2. For more balanced representation, the Board would be comprised of two members elected from each Innovation Zone and one Member would be elected at large.I have read through the State Statues and we can go to a 7 member board.† It will require a ballot initiative.†The issue can be put on the ballot by the school board or citizen petition signed by 5% of the registered voters in the district.†If it is possible to get the change passed in the April County wide election, the board election in November would be based on the changes. While it will not solve everything, I believe that it will lead to more balanced representation.†I believe that a governance change would be positive and be more productive than our ritual of recall elections.†I am willing to take on the ballot effort.Kevin ButcherColorado Springs (D 49 parent)
