Every October, fire departments across the country observe National Fire Prevention Week, which is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association. Itís a way to raise awareness about fire prevention and safety. This year, Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 7 to Oct. 13, and the theme is ìHave 2 Ways Out!îAccording to the NFPA, only one of every three American households has created and practiced a home escape plan. When fire breaks out, occupants may have less than two minutes to safely escape their home once a fire alarm sounds. Here are some tips for developing a home escape plan:
- Draw a map of the house, including locations of all doors and windows.
- Determine at least two ways out of every room when possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
- Designate an outside meeting place where everyone will meet. This can be a tree, mailbox or light pole a safe distance away from the house.
- Discuss the plan with everyone who lives in the home.
- Practice home fire drills at least twice a year, at night and during the day.
