Growing up in Shreveport, La., Jerry Dupree loved to stop by the local Southern Maid Donut Shop any time of the day. When he was laid off from Verizon Wireless in December 2010, Dupree decided to bring his favorite donuts to Falcon. With a leased space at 11605 Meridian Market View, Suite 190; he said he hopes to open the donut franchise May 15. A grand opening for Southern Maid Donuts is planned for a later date.”Pretty much that first week we’re just asking everyone to come in and try one,” Dupree said. “If you like it, get more. I truly believe this is a superior product to anything you’ll find in town.”While Southern Maid Donuts is technically a franchise, Dupree said the stipulations for operating are simple, he said. “The flour is a secret recipe, so you agree to buy their flour and follow their recipe so you can use their name, but that’s pretty much where the tie ends,” Dupree said. The flexibility allows Dupree the freedom to offer other selections like sandwiches for the lunch crowd. However, “the concentration will still be on the donuts,” he said. The slogan – “It’s Hot after 4” – confirms the focus on donuts. Every day, after 4 p.m., the bakers will make glazed donuts as they are ordered to ensure the donuts are “hot after 4.”Dupree and his family chose the site in Falcon because “everything just fell into place,” he said. “I was driving around one night looking at empty sites, and on the way home we saw this site and it was set up really perfectly.”Dupree said the people have not only welcomed him, but also encouraged him. “I’ve been amazed at the number of people that have stopped by to ask when we’re opening and what we’re doing,” Dupree said. “I really think we chose the right place.”Southern Maid Donut Shop will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit the Web site at http://southernmaidcolorado.com.
