On May 18, the Falcon Fire Protection District board must decide how to cut $300,000 to $350,000 from next year’s budget because of a projected 15 to 20 percent reduction in property tax collections.In April, the board held an open work session to review ideas for potential changes effective in 2012. “It’s important that the public stays involved in this decision, as it will have an effect on their level of service,” said fire chief Trent Harwig.In 2010, the district cut the budget in almost every category to maintain services at their current level and balance the budget. From 2010 to 2011, the district faced no revenue increases because of a lack of local growth. In an effort to keep costs down, the district has already been using smaller quick-response vehicles whenever possible, instead of the larger engines. In addition, salaries have been stalled at their 2010 rates, and benefits have been decreased.The results of the district’s work session will be presented at the May 18 board meeting, which begins at 4 p.m. at 7030 Old Meridian Road.
