A panel of Miami-Yoder faculty members chose student Kierra Powers as the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Good Citizen program and scholarship award recipient. The contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The contest consists of two parts: a transcript and letters of recommendation and an essay administered under the supervision of a faculty member. A non-DAR member judges the entries. The state winner receives $250, and the national winner receives a $5,000 scholarship.Kierra was born in Denver and lives with her grandmother. Music has played a major role in her life. Kierra’s grandfather played the tenor saxophone, and she inherited his saxophone. By self-teaching, she is learning to play the saxaphone, as well as the guitar. In the fifth grade, Kierra took flute lessons and has won recognition for this talent. She performed a solo ensemble in Limon, as well as solos, duets and trios for high school programs; and, in 2006, she was a featured soloist at a concert, which included her name on a CD for the concert.Kierra has participated in two beauty pageants: Miss Teen Pageant 2007 and National American Miss 2009.On the principal’s honor roll, she also earned the Semper Fidelis Award for musical excellence from the U.S. Marines in 2008, lettered in track in 2006 and 2007 and received a varsity letter in volleyball in 2008-2009, as well as lettering in music in 2007-2009.She plans to attend college at either Howard University or Ohio State University and major in radiology, specializing in prenatal ultrasound. Music could be a minor, she said.
