Pikes Peak Library District will launch into space with this year’s All Pikes Peak Reads, offering the community a chance to meet astronauts, Stormtroopers, hear space-age music, see NASA exhibits and read a favorite APPR book. APPR is a community-wide reading program with discussion groups, author appearances, film screenings, theater, library children’s events and more.The two-month program begins with a kick-off event Sept. 20 at America the Beautiful Park, 126 Cimino Drive, from 1 to 3 p.m. Activities include free food, music, games, crafts, prizes and special rocket blast-off with the Challenger Learning Center of Colorado Springs and the Space Foundation.Pikes Peak Library District’s 2009 selections are: “Rocket Boys” by Homer Hickam; “Have Space Suit Will Travel” by Robert Heinlein; “Community: The Structure of Belonging” by Peter Block; and “The Space Tourist’s Handbook” by Eric Anderson and Joshua Piven. Author Homer Hickam will also come to Colorado Springs to speak during the project in October.
