Pamela Weir of Weir Capital Connections was guest speaker at the Oct. 7 Falcon Exchange Club meeting. Pamela has retinitis pigmentosa, which causes tunnel vision and progressive peripheral vision loss. Perspective employers have told Pamela that they could not accommodate her needs for employment. As well as being CEO of her cash flow consulting business, she also speaks to organizations on “Disabilities in the Workplace” and gives a series of lectures entitled “Winning Attitudes with disABILITIES.” She started the Disability Matters Initiative to change the paradigm of employment opportunities in Southern Colorado. Pamela spoke to the club about the misconceptions of, and the benefits to, hiring the disabled employee, stressing that the Americans with Disabilities Act doesn’t expect the disabled person to get a free ticket to employment and be exempt from company policies and procedures, but be given reasonable accommodations to perform their duties.Pamela briefly discussed the different types of equipment that disabled employees use in their jobs and that the government will provide tax benefits for hiring a person with a disability. For more information about the Falcon Exchange Club, contact Joe Bauer at 262-9222 or Jan Pizzi at 495-1288.
