For more than 80 years, the Lions Clubs have been associated with sight. Now, the Lions International organization is hoping to raise $150 million in the newly launched Campaign SightFirst II that continues and expands the work of the SightFirst program implemented in 1990.With the 1990 SightFirst program, the Lions have been able to restore vision through such projects as cataract surgery, distributing medication and training medical personnel. As a part of Campaign SightFirst II, individual members of the Calhan Lions Club will be reaching into their pockets to contribute money through a “no-bake” sale activity. A “no-bake” sale is a bake sale without the baked goods, said chairwoman Donna Selle. “No need to spend hours in the kitchen baking cookies or cakes. Members just donate the money they would have spent on ingredients to the Campaign SightFirst II kitty,” Selle said. The project will continue through May.The Calhan Lions Club also has used its funds to help people in the area obtain eyeglasses. Carl Breuning, chairman of the club’s eyeglass project, reported that the club was able to help an elderly man who just recently picked up his new eyeglasses from Lenscrafters. The Calhan Lions Club encourages community-minded persons to join its organization.
