Kathy Hare, president of the Upper Black Squirrel Groundwater Management District, was the feature speaker at the Falcon Area Issues Roundtable meeting Sept. 22. Hare talked about the problems associated with the area’s water sources and provided information on possible solutions. Problems that Hare highlighted include a lack of renewable water sources, disagreements with El Paso County on the UBS board’s right to monitor water quality, maintenance of individual septic systems, declining water levels from all sources. To resolve some of the water issues, Hare discussed the need to stop exporting water and also to set standards in line with the Colorado Health Department for wastewater treatment systems. She cited the Santa Fe Springs Development as an example of a successful wastewater treatment system. The development recycles water to the homes for drinking and outside use like irrigation through two different pipes. Recycling the water offers many benefits, such as capturing water that currently flows out of the basin and limiting the need to pump from the Denver Basin, a nonrenewable source. It was also announced at the meeting that the FAIR Web site is up and running. Visit www.falconroundtable.orgThe next FAIR meeting will be held in late October.
