Since the holiday of the month is Thanksgiving, it seemed appropriate to “talk a little turkey” with three Falcon residents and one person from Colorado Springs.Say the word Thanksgiving to the average red-blooded American, and he or she may start to drool at the thought of feasting on turkey and all the fixings. Thanksgiving also conjures up visions of pumpkin pie and football marathons. But where did Thanksgiving get its start? What’s your definition of Thanksgiving? Who celebrated the first Thanksgiving?
Sierra Tune – Falcon “The Pingrels (Pilgrims) and the Indians traded food and made food for each other. They ate turkey and corn and maybe fish.” | Michelle Theriault – Colorado Springs “Indians and Pilgrims came over from England on the Mayflower. The first Thanksgiving took place in Massachusetts in 1774? I don’t know. History class was a long time ago.” | |
Kendra Nance – Falcon “Thanksgiving is when the Pilgrims came from England to explore the land and they found the Indians. They got here by ship. The Mayfloat? (Grandma was giving her hints about the Mayflower). It was in the 1700 or 1800s in New Jersey?” | Trey Pelton – Falcon “It was the Native Americans and the Pilgrims, although I associate Thanksgiving more with the Native Americans. I think it happened in Massachusetts. They (the Pilgrims) came over on the Mayflower.” |
