Yes on the mill levy for Falcon firefighting efforts

On the ballot in the Falcon Fire Protection District is the most critical question for area residents during this election. It deals with the protection and safety of our neighbors and our families. The district, which is comprised of nine career and 25 volunteer firefighters and medical technicians, needs additional financial resources to provide the level of service the residents rightfully expect. They have asked for the passage of Measures 5 B and C.There are those, such as Douglas Bruce, who don’t live in this district, that speak out forcefully against the board and its demonstrated need for additional equipment, facilities and training. They demand that residents defeat funding measures not only in Falcon, but in surrounding communities as well. They make spurious claims of illegality and mismanagement. While they urge the defeat of these vital funding measures, they will never face the consequences. Their loved one will never suffer needlessly for want of a more timely medical response; their home will never be lost for want of resources. The two measures will have the combined effect of raising the annual tax burden on a home, with an assessed value of $250,000, a mere $86. For that modest sum, our volunteer and career firefighters will have the tools and training they require to continue to provide a reasonable level of care and protection to the community. If we treasure our homes, our families and our neighbors, there is only one socially responsible action – vote to support the district and its financial needs. But, during this period of growth and anticipated growth in Falcon, money is not all that is needed. For nearly 30 years, I have been a volunteer firefighter and EMT in the communities in which I have lived. Two years ago, I joined Falcon’s Fire Department. They are among the best trained and most dedicated men and women. But, there has to be more of us – please join us.Finally, the unfaltering comments which the opponents of these measures make against the men and women of the board and department are scandalous. Mr. Bruce, respond with me from your warm bed at 3 a.m. to comfort an elderly patient as they pass; to extinguish the flames engulfing the home down the road; to put your life on the line in service to others. Then, I may extend your views some credence.John M. ScorsinePeyton
