“I see the media as a huge kitchen table that stretches across this country, (where) we all sit around and debate and discuss the most important issues of the day: war and peace, life and death. Anything less … is a disservice to the service men and women of this country. Anything less … is a disservice to a democratic society. The media’s got to change.”– Amy Goodman, Democracy NowWe are just a small-town newspaper with a tiny footprint in the landscape of the print media. However, small is not an excuse for mediocrity. The editorial goals of this newspaper are as lofty as the New York Times. We aim for in-depth articles, a style consistent with journalism standards and always we aim for the truth. Anything less is a disservice to the spirit of our work. You can expect professionalism and factual reporting from the media. Don’t settle … anything less is a disservice to you as a consumer.Don’t settle for mediocrity in government either. Please vote in the elections. In this issue and the last one, we’ve tried to include as much as possible about candidates and issues. In an age where the television screen turns into a boxing ring for sparring political candidates, it’s easy to become the punching bag – taking one hit after another. But in the end, you control who and what goes down.Last but not least, as we mentioned in our October issue, we will be publishing a second NFH edition each month, beginning next month. Because we are going to twice a month, we are changing our distribution schedule. We will be in the newsstands and in your homes on the first and third Saturday of each month, starting with the December issue. Instead of receiving your next issue on the last Saturday in November, expect it on the first Saturday – Dec. 2. We will again distribute a leaner issue (at least for now) Dec. 16. Remember that some months, December included, we will have an extra week so your January issue won’t be out until Jan. 6.Nothing will change with the first of the month NFH. Our regular features like Face to Face, Limelight and Monkey Chronicles, with the exception of Health and Wellness, Community Calendar and News Briefs, will not carry over to our second edition. However, we will be adding a couple of new columns to our mid-month issue. As always, we welcome your suggestions. That’s it for now. Happy Thanksgiving – and a special thanks to our wonderful writers, contributing editor, designers, sales reps, distribution team and administrative support personnel. Please vote this Tuesday!– Michelle & Marylou
