Write-In Candidates

With over 20 write-in candidates for various political offices throughout Colorado, people are becoming more aware of alternative routes (other than the general caucus or assembly) for getting on the ballot.Candidates obtain the paperwork from the appropriate government office, complete the paperwork and the government office verifies and certifies the candidate is a registered member of the identified political party. The candidate must be a member of that party for at least one year and a one-year resident of the jurisdiction he or she wishes to represent. Once the candidate is certified, he or she is valid and can be considered as a write-in candidate. When the ballots are printed, the ballot will have the names of the candidates selected through the caucus and assembly process, as well as an oval and blank line for voters who choose to “write-in” the name of the registered, write-in candidates. When voters go to a precinct to vote, the can ask for a list of any write-in candidates, and it will be handed to them at the time. If voters request a mail-in ballot, they will receive a list of write-in candidates with the ballot in the mail. You cannot simply write in just anyone’s name on the ballot. The two legal county commissioner write-in candidates for District 2 are Jim Day and Bob Null.
