El Paso County’s Department of Transportation has been recognized for its successful management and completion of the Woodmen Road Expressway last June. The department has received the “Colorado Big Project of the Year for 2009” from the WTS Colorado Chapter. WTS Colorado recognition chairwoman Danielle Smith commended the county’s Woodmen Road improvement project team, led by project manager Jennifer Irvine, for “innovative strategies, multi-agency collaborations and dedication to women in leading roles, which made this project the clear winner.”Irvine experienced a few personal challenges throughout the almost three years it took to complete the project. “During the design and construction of this project, I had two daughters,” Irvine said. “This project would have never been completed without the establishment of trust and leadership between the entire team during my maternity leaves. I also had to learn to balance all of the expectations and commitments surrounding my work on this project with those of my growing family.”About WTSFounded in 1977, WTS is an international organization dedicated to the professional advancement of women in transportation. With more than 4,000 members (men and women), WTS is helping women find opportunity and recognition in the transportation industry through its professional activities, networking opportunities and access to industry and government leaders.
