Winter sports are winding down

Falcon High School’s winter sports season is winding down with numerous successes. Both the boys and girls basketball teams finished seasons with big accomplishments and unexpected wins. Falcon wrestling concluded with some heartbreaking losses, but high hopes for next year.On Jan. 27, boys’ basketball achieved the unthinkable and defeated Cheyenne Mountain. Vice-Principal Rick Tanski had this to say about the win, “New uniforms: $800; transportation: $1,000; beating the unbeatable: priceless.” This was a huge win for the Falcons. Also in the wins column was a 70 to 57 win over Pine Creek and a 69 to 44 win over Sand Creek. The team is amazing as well as the individual players. Senior Bobby Ratterree is ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 3 in the state for three pointers. Bruce Roath also had a phenomenal season. During the game against Mesa Ridge, Roath racked up 29 points, a season high. Despite some losses, the boys managed to pull themselves together for some amazing wins.Girls’ basketball looked great this season as well. There will be many seniors missed next year, but the basketball program will continue to thrive. Senior Ashley Cook said, “I think this season went fairly well, there were games we lost that we should have won, but it turned out to be better than past seasons”. The girls competed better than expected and undoubtedly shocked their competition.Wrestling ended their season at the regional competition. Sophomore Austin Green was the final competitor of the February regional competition, and barely missed his opportunity to advance to state. He wrestled hard and took his match to overtime, and lost by a mere two points. Disappointment filled the wrestlers as none went on to the state competition. Hardship struck the team early, but the Falcons stayed strong. With a young lineup every match, each individual wrestled their heart out for their team and pride. The team made their mark in Falcon history. As winter season comes to an end, and the spring sports are underway. Baseball is expected to do great things this season with the first game of the season on March 10 against Manitou Springs. The track team has already started their conditioning as coaches Mary Ann Wilson and Lisa Ratterree take over the field. Falcon does not currently have a soccer or tennis team, but that doesn’t stop the girls who want to play. They will play even if it means traveling to Sand Creek to do it. Spring sports will end the year being just as competitive as the previous seasons.
